Battery spring for the Lab, for use in Spring-Loaded Mode only.
Springs cannot provide any dependable battery protection or user safety, since they only react only after a battery has overheated. By that time, any battery will be partially damaged, exposing the user to serious risks.
Therefore, using the Lab in Springless-Fused Mode should be considered as absolutely necessary in order to minimize risks.
Spring Options
Lab springs are manufactured in 5 different variations, each with its own pros and cons:
- Plain, unplated brass springs provide good performance, but their top/bottom contact areas must be routinely cleaned. A plain brass spring comes in the box of every Lab.
- C197 copper alloy springs are unplated and may require periodic cleaning. They have a higher copper content than brass springs, which makes them perform better than their brass counterparts despite their softer flex. The softer flex of these springs make them more comfortable for use with the Lab bottom cap than brass springs.
- C7025 copper alloy springs are made from a temperature-resistant alloy with unique properties. They are unplated but do not require cleaning, and perform better than their brass counterparts. They are softer than brass springs but harder than C197 alloy springs. They are also more comfortable for use with the Lab bottom cap than brass springs.
- Silver-plated, brass springs have a very small contact resistance due to the silver plating. However, silver has poor mechanical properties, which means that the plating will slowly wear off. To remedy this, silver-plated springs have an additional corrosion/stress resistant under-plating, which, however, is not as conductive as silver, but still better than un-plated brass. A good choice for the best possible performance and still better than un-plated brass even if the top layer wears off after many months of use.
- Rhodium-plated, brass springs are great all-rounders. Rhodium is an extra-durable plating material, which will not tarnish in any environment and is highly conductive. Plus, it has a bright, grey-silver tone, that looks simply unreal.
